Lindsey Laurain is the founder of ezpz. She is a wife and working mom to three wild boys who serve as her inspiration, her in-home product testers and her ezpz models. Lindsey never imagined she would leave corporate America and become a mom entrepreneur, but says this journey has been phenomenal. The ezpz mission is to make mealtime less about mess and stress so you can keep it focused on what’s important – family. Everyday she is inspired by community, positivity, giving back and, of course, her family and team.

1) What is it ezpz and how did you come up with the idea for it?
We have 3 young boys and our life can be pretty chaotic, especially at mealtime! My husband and I were fed up with the messiness and cleanup time dedicated to each meal. One night (in the midst of his frustration) my husband said, “Someone needs to create something kids can’t toss or throw at meals!” The next day I hopped online and, low and behold, nothing exists. From that day on I was committed to creating products that made meals with kids ezpz – and that is how the Happy Mat came to be!

2) Where do you see the business going?

In the short term I want to continue building the ezpz brand and our offerings. Our goal is to revolutionize the feeding industry. In addition to creating high quality, revolutionary products, we want to be a resource for the feeding / parent community!

3) How did your experience on Shark Tank help your business?

Shark Tank was an extremely valuable, albeit difficult, experience for me. After spending time with the sharks I feel that I am in a better position for future conversations with potential investors / acquirers / partners.
Regarding ezpz, the exposure that we gained through Shark Tank has been great. Outside of a nice bump in sales, we have had a tremendous response from independent retailers, occupational therapists and feeding specialists, caregivers in the geriatric industry…the list goes on and on.

4) What made your mind up to move on without a deal?

My main goal in terms of partnership was to gain expertise / help with licensing and/or ezpz sub-lines. So, in the end, it didn’t feel like the right business decision for ezpz. I also am fiercely protective of my team and the culture that we have created. I felt that accepting one of the offers could have put our team culture and dynamic in jeopardy. 5) What inspired you to go into business?

My background is in business (I studied business in undergrad and have an MBA) and I have worked in the corporate world my whole career. But, when my husband came up with an amazing idea that truly solves a problem, I was all in. It’s sort-of funny; I never imagined I would be an entrepreneur, but now that I am, I can’t imagine doing anything else!

6) What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?
As a first step, I highly recommend ordering the Mom Inventors Handbook. I found it to be very helpful and still use it as reference guide!
I also am a firm believer in goal setting, hard work and passion. Follow your gut, network and surround yourself with smart people who have expertise where you don’t.
